The Door County Fair set the backdrop for the return of late model racing to Sturgeon Bay as the Dirt Kings Late Model Touring Series made the first ever appearance at The Hill Raceway. In total 90 cars and stars waged battle on the third mile clay oval but only one would end the night King of the Fair.
The WABAM Dirt King Late Model feature had a $5000 payday on the line thanks to Seubert Calf Ranches. The big money on the line brought out the big guns on the track as 26 late models lay siege on the fairgrounds. “Mighty” Mike Mullen launched to the early lead at the drop of the green and never looked back as he led every lap of the 50 lap feature and became the first King of the Fair. Joel Bennett came home second, Nick Anvelink third, Sam Mars fourth, and Tim Isenberg completed the top five. A full race recap can be found on the Dirt Kings website; https://dirtkingstour.com/
The Kroll Machine and Fabrication Stock Car main event opened with Tracy Koontz securing the top spot at the drop of the green. The “Bulldozer” Dave Bouche inherited the lead on lap five when caution flew as Koontz and Jeremy Anschutz battled too hard at the front of the field and collected each other in a caution inducing spin. The restart had Bouche pacing the field but Caden LeMieux worked by the veteran driver on lap seven and looked destined to salt away the win until point leader, Brett Wenzel, slipped by on lap 15. It was smooth sailing for Wenzel over the final five laps as he notched the win. LeMieux settled for second, Zach Spangenberg was third, Troy Muench fourth, and Bouche rounded out the top five.
Scott Howe led the opening laps of the caution marred T. Simon Jewelers Northern Sport Mod A-main event. Point leader, Craig Dorner, managed to move up the field with every yellow that flew. Lap four saw Dorner slide into third, and then into the runner up spot one lap later. Dorner saved the best for last as he piloted into the top spot on the final lap and added to his point lead. Howe came home second, Brayden LeMieux third, Bernie “The Ironman” Reinhardt fourth, and “Rowdy” Randy Theys was fifth.
The Millies Pub and Grub Unified Dirt Street Stock main event started with Shanon Guelette grabbing the lead on the opening lap. Guelette survived the caution-filled event and ended the night parked in victory lane. “The Muscles From Brussels” Garrett Geyer was second, “Fast” Tyler Fox third, “The Hammer” Dave DeGrave fourth, and Racin’ Jason Geyer closed out the top five.
The Hill Raceway is back in action Saturday, August 16th with another night of Door County Fair racing. The Midwest Legends Dirt Series will be on hand along with the Stock Cars, Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and 4 Cylinders. Grandstand admission is included with fair admission and racing will start at 6:00.
